Success Story

Jala Subhiksha

Jalasubhiksha is a well recharging programme taken up under the aegis of Mahatma Gandhi NREG Scheme with the objective to increase water table level and to improve water quality of wells in the state. It was introduced GO(MS)No.161/16/LSGD dtd 09/11/2016

Aims

  • To protect water bodies through various activities and thereby ensure water security.
  • Effectively utilize rainwater to ensure year round availability of water in wells, which are the major sources of drinking water in the state.
  • To make all wells in the State sustainable in water and sanitised step by step.
  • To propagate and implement the idea ‘sanitary well’

Mode of implementation

In the first step, the programme was implemented in 142 grama panchayaths in the State. Wells that needs to be recharged are identified through survey. Employees who worked for at least 15 days under Mahatma Gandhi NREGS in the previous year will be trained in well recharging and utilized as skilled workers for the programme. Unskilled works under the programme will be undertaken by unskilled workers under the Scheme. Material procurement for the programme will follow the guidelines issued under the Scheme. Wherever possible, the programme will be converged with Integrated Watershed Management Programme(IWMP), Jalanidhi, other watershed development programmes and projects of LSGIs.
In addition of utilizing the resources of Mahatma Gandhi NREGS, Jalasubhiksha also envisages to converge the funds available from NGOs, CSR, sponsoring etc and also to motivate people to recharge wells on their own.
